In his book Racing the Antelope: What Animals Can Teach Us about Running and Life, biologist Bernd Heinrich tells us that even though the antelope is one of the world’s fastest mammals, ancient man was able to run them to a state of exhaustion during hunts. How? The antelope is a great sprinter, but they are unable to go on and on for long distances at a time. On the other hand, Heinrich calls the human species an endurance predator. Man has a combination of slow-twitch and fast-twitch muscle fibers that give us the metabolism to sprint short distances even after going and going for miles.
