Do Sports Drinks Really Give You the Edge?

We've discussed how important it is to stay hydrated while working out, especially in the summer months when the heat can become problematic. Many athletes turn to sports drinks as their choice of rehydrating beverage during and after an intense workout.

There are a variety of benefits to drinking sports drinks. They are made especially for absorption and digestion and are made with carbohydrates to prevent fatigue and sugar to help muscles. They also are designed to help maintain the proper amount of sodium. Sport drinks also contain electrolytes that help maintain muscle and nerve functions. During intense exercise, we lose electrolytes and if not replenished, can lead to dehydration, muscle weakness, and muscle contractions.

Sports drinks may also contain proteins and caffeine. Because protein is so important in building and maintaining muscle mass, ingesting sports drinks that contain protein can aid in this. It can also spur recovery and proper recovery is invaluable to improving strength and muscular endurance. The caffeine in sports drinks can help improve reaction times, enhance focus and concentration, and help reduce fatigue.

Unfortunately, because of the sugar content in sports drinks, it is important to remember not to drink them on a daily basis. They may taste good, but if you are not exercising for longer than an hour then drinking these may lead to weight gain.  While practicing and preparing to compete in the 2012 Fall National Tournament Circuit, sports drinks can come in handy after an hour or two of a great workout!
